Two LABSS Modern Apprentices Recognised for Their Outstanding Achievements
The new Scottish Building Standards Hub hosted a launch event at Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline on Tuesday 3rd September which LABSS members were invited to attend.
A particular highlight of the event was that LABSS were given the opportunity to recognise the achievements of some of the modern apprentices who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their role and personal development.
The LABSS Modern Apprentice Scheme, launched in 2022, was developed by LABSS and the Building Standards Division of Scottish Government with the view of addressing some of the challenges raised in the Workforce Strategy workstream of the futures board. The delivery of the modern apprentice programme has been heavily supported by the Scottish Building Standards Hub.
The modern apprenticeship was designed to be a 4 year process where apprentices would study towards an HNC level qualification, delivered by Fife College, and an SVQ qualification delivered by UHI Inverness College in years 1 and 2 to allow apprentices to progress to further education in years 3 and 4. The SVQ element of the Modern apprenticeship requires work-based evidence to be provided to demonstrate relevant competencies are achieved. The nature of this type of qualification gives an indication of an individuals academic and professional attainment and through this process, two outstanding apprentices have been identified by UHI Inverness College.

Kenna Warren, Assessor / Trainer from the Built Environment Team at UHI Inverness College said of Charlie Calder:
"Over the last 2 years, as his workload expanded, I could see his confidence grow and he would provide some outstanding evidence for his portfolio with an exceptional attention to detail. He would meet all deadlines set and despite having to take some personal leave at the start of his apprenticeship journey, Charlie has excelled with his SVQ and completed his portfolio within 18 months."
Kenna said of Emilie Clark:
"Emilie has an extraordinary ability to listen and absorb the information given to her and as her confidence within her role developed, she has upload some high-quality evidence for her portfolio. Her attention to detail and focus is reflected within her SVQ which she completed within 18 months"
Congratulations again to both Charlie and Emilie!
